May 2026 was characterised by weather conditions that were highly favourable to vine growth.
The vines are having a particularly early spring in 2026. Temperatures at the end of May, which were often above seasonal norms, accelerated vegetative growth to such an degree that the vintage is currently being compared to 2020, one of the earliest years of the last decade.
The weather has often been changeable with temperaturesThe weather has often been changeable, with moderate temperatures, several spells of rain and showers, and well-watered soil following a spring that was already relatively wet.
These conditions encouraged vigorous vegetative growth.
Last week: summer transition
From 22–23 May, the situation changes abruptly.
Temperatures of up to 33°C, very sunny weather, no rain at all, wind and heat accelerate the development of the vines.
The first flowers were observed on 20 May; this flowering phase was very rapid, and by 31 May it was almost over.
The debudding phase ends on 22 May.
At the same time, given the rapid growth, the lifting of the vines begins.
The mild, dry weather allows for a good period of soil work just before flowering.
